Run the Streets at Woolaroc 8K Race
I did it. I finished my first race! That’s right, home girl is on the track to completing this month’s Bucket List with gold stars.
Last weekend, I participated in the Run the Streets at Woolaroc 8K Race. I had so much fun, once I passed the finish line and grabbed a drink, I felt like I could have put in another 5 miles. I was on some kind of runners high, the rest of the day I was bouncing off of the walls with more energy than a three-year old.
A coworker talked me in to doing the race with her… She kept telling me it was a fun run but definitely challenging. If you know me, I’m always up for a challenge. When I pulled up to Woolaroc Saturday morning, it was a crisp 38 degrees; perfect weather for running because you always feel at least 20 degree warmer once you get your heart pumping. The drive in was beautiful. Deer, buffalo, zebras and ostrich line the drive up to the starting line. Seeing all of the other runners certainly got you hyped up! My nerves were finally drifting away once my coworker/friend arrived. We scarfed down a banana, drank a V8 energy drink and took the obligatory before photo.
Once the race got started we sort of went our separate ways. There were these two younger girls in front of me that appeared to be keeping a pretty steady pace, so I made a goal to try to keep up with them. Apparently, they didn’t realize that in order to reserve energy, you need to pull back and slow down on the big hills. Well, I ended up passing them after the 2nd mile because I had learned from previous outings that if I wanted to complete the run without stopping, I needed to slow down on the big inclines and then speed back up on the down hills. The total elevation ended up being an approximately 323 ft.
As you can see below, the red lines reflect me slowing my speed down on the inclines and the green shows me speeding up on the down hill / flats.
Of course, the mandatory after photo. Because it didn't happen if there wasn't a photo, right?
This is what a runner's high looks like. Oh and that happy feeling of devouring Freddy's ;)
To be honest, I’m just happy I finished, alive and on both feet. I'm excited to sign up for another one!
