The Art of Smudging 101: The Basics

After I published my latest thrifting finds video (If you haven’t watched it yet, what are you doing?! Check it out, here) I received a few questions about smudging. So I’m taking a few of those answers and turning it into a blog post for anyone curious about the basic ideals of smudging. There are a lot of faucets to smudging so this is a very broad and top-level enlightenment session.

WHAT IS SMUDGING? In the simplest term, smudging is the act of cleansing. Are you intrigued yet? Okay good, let’s delve in. Smudging is based on the combination of herbal, spiritual, medicinal and cultural teachings of the past. A smudge ceremony (aka Sacred Smoke Bowl Blessing) is performed to correct the energy in your home, office, a person or even an object.

BENEFITS The benefits of smudging are endless, so I’ll only mention a few today. Smudging not only allows you to wash away all the emotional and spiritual negativity that gathers in your body, on a day to day basis, but combats said negativity, clears your energy and helps you start afresh. The aroma of the smudge stick and the effects of smudging can be very effective, oftentimes, sending away stress or anxiety instantly. This practice allows you to make room for energy, good vibes and peace. It is recommended to smudge on a regular basis, like the beginning of every new season. This helps your body and space adjust to the healing rhythms of the seasonal cycle. Most importantly, though, smudging can turn your home (or any space) and your body into a peaceful (+ beautiful!) temple in which you can find happiness and rejuvenation.

IS THIS SOMETHING NEW? The history of smudging goes back thousands of years. (Warning, this ranks moderately high on the woo-woo scale) The Native Americans, called on the spirits of sacred plants to drive away negative energies, which then allows you to be back into a state of balance. Smudging, to early Native Americans, is the psychic equivalent of washing our hands before eating. Remember, when you perform a smudging ritual you are plugging into an ancient, powerful line of spiritual tradition.

Earlier this year, a friend of mine suggested I host a trunk show in our hometown. My first thought, “Well damn, why haven’t I done this sooner!” and then, my second thought, “How can we make this as badass as possible?” So I put my thinking cap on, maybe had a few glasses of champagne and started tossing ideas back and forth with her. You see, where we live there is really nothing to do or anywhere to shop. So, I thought it would be fun to host a “Girls Night Out” for all of my customers. Plus, this would be a great opportunity for new and old customers to touch + try on, Rad Maverix Apparel, and simply enjoy the evening with a glass of champagne and cupcake in tow. Not to mention, I was stupid excited to meet some of these babes that I had only met on social media. However, I didn’t want this event to be just about Rad Maverix. I wanted to provide a platform for some of my favorite boss babes to showcase their small businesses as well.

In my humble opinion, I had the best line up of small businesses:

If you’ve never hosted an event before, please, let me recap for you. You literally go on, what feels like, a never-ending roller coaster of emotions:

  • Excitement to meet loyal Rad Maverix customers
  • Apprehension that everything goes as planned (God forbid, we run out of product or even worse - champagne!)
  • Anxiety that only crickets show up
  • Enthusiasm that you’re hosting a fun event for all the babes in your, very small, hometown! 

When we opened the doors at 5:40 (sorry, we were fashionably late, but I think it was worth it!) the weight of the world lifted from my shoulders. When I saw a line of #bossbabes waiting to get in, I knew it was going to be a successful event. You guys. I thought I was going to cry; especially when I saw the ladies who had driven 100’s (I’m serious.) of miles to support my small side hustle, Rad Maverix Brand. I wanted to hug every single person that walked through that door. 

I seriously hope everyone had a blast. I've had many requests to host more of these events and with the fun that was had, I think that's a must.

Hello + happy May! Spring is definitely thriving in Oklahoma; flowers are blooming and trees are coming back to life. With the warmer weather, schedules + agendas become busier and before we know it, autumn is here. However, I’d like to take a moment to remind you that it is so important to embrace and enjoy each season. This means, not only the physical season but also the season of life you’re currently in.

All too often, we set goals or wait to enjoy life when a certain time or event occurs. For instance, I’ve heard my friends say, “I’ll be happy when I have $xxxx in my savings account” Or “I will finally be able to enjoy life when I’ve lost xx pounds.” Don’t get me wrong; I too, used to fall for these mindsets. I once said, “I’ll be happy when I’m done with college and don’t have to worry about juggling school-work and a full-time job, anymore.” However, with a little practice, you too, can learn to grab life by the horns and enjoy the season (of life) you’re in, to its greatest potential.

A little backstory: I am the world’s worst at trying to be superwoman and take on ALL of life’s responsibilities. Like mentioned above, this takes me back to my college days, when I was working full time, taking 18+ college hours and trying to maintain a household plus ensure all of our bills were paid, on time. I’ll be the first to tell you, it took a couple crying-out loud-breakdowns to realize I’m not superwoman. I remember sitting on the corner of our bed, crying to my mom because I couldn’t handle it. I couldn't handle every single thing that needed to be done each day. At that moment I didn’t think I was cutout to be a (human) Mom, let alone just a girlfriend or wife. Then the clouds parted, and Mom said:


“It’s okay. It’s okay to ask for help. You don’t have to do this by yourself.”


Well, shit. Why hadn’t I thought about that before?

Of course, it would be easy to say that after those hopeful words, everything was fine and I could quickly let loose of that mile long to-do list that I had been clenching onto for dear life. But, we know that’s not how it works. Fast forward 5 years and I’m finally at a point in my life where I’m “okay” letting others take care of some of those day-to-day duties that once made me feel empowered and in control because I could handle it all by myself (or so I thought). Thinking back, when I was in that season of life, you know, when college is supposed to be fun! I wasn’t having fun at all. Not even in the least bit. I wish I could go back and tell myself to enjoy that season of my life a little bit more, because it won’t last long. Enjoy being an “oblivious” college student because before too long, here comes a mortgage, 401K / retirement planning, car + land payments, health insurance, etc.

It's okay to ask for help

Once you realize you don’t have to be everything for everyone, you can really enjoy the seasons of your life. So, please, learn from me. It’s okay to say “no” when you’re schedule is already overflowing with tasks. It’s okay to ask for help, whether it be your partner or parent(s)!

Tips for finding happiness + appreciating the season of life you’re in:

  1. Make a list of what is most important to you; circle the top 3 and focus your energy on these things
  2. Allow yourself to let go, slow down &/or ask for help
  3. Appreciate that the things that are important to you right now may change in the coming years and that’s okay
  4. Make your to-do shorter + enjoy the process of accomplishing each task

Benefits of appreciating the season of life you’re in:

  1. Making the most of the here and now
  2. Not having regrets in the future as you look back on this time in your life
  3. The feeling of content and happiness with life overall

  4. ISH Beauty Contour Kit in Light / Medium ($32 value) – as I’ve mentioned in the past, make up application is not my strong point but looking forward to figuring out how to “contour” effectively. I currently highlight but bronzing / contouring / baking all sound extremely overwhelming. The colors in the palette are very pretty; however I think the blush is a little too “pink” for me. Looking forward to figuring it all out.
  5. Bodypure Glove and Socks ($10 value) – I was skeptical at first, and you can see that reaction in the video. This is certainly not a product I would purchase but I’m going to give them a try!  
  6. Marrakesh Hair Oil in Original Scent ($23 value) – So excited to try this hair oil! I’m currently using Aquage from my hair stylist (which I plan to continue using once I pick up my new bottle!) and I love how it makes my hair feel. This Marrakesh brand is certainly thicker than the Aquage I’m used too but the scent is so delicious.
  7. HelloLegs ($19.99 value) – This appears to be a lotion/shaving cream combo product. I enjoy using shaving cream but it seems like when I run out it’s not always at the top of my list to restock? Like, I love it, but I can live without, does that make sense?
  8. Merrithew Mat Strap Plus ($15 value) – this is so cool! Even though I don’t take my yoga mat anywhere, I can definitely use this for resistance training. This would be the perfect product for someone who regularly takes a yoga class!
  9. Thirty One Bits ($25 value) – a gift card to an online jewelry store that uses fashion and design to empower people to rise about poverty. I LOVE this. Can’t wait to purchase a piece from them!
  10. Sterling Forever ($30 value) – another gift card to purchase sterling silver accessories. I’ve already taken a look at their website and it is super cute + chic.

What Kind of Legacy Are You Leaving?

A couple months ago, I hired a copywriter (Jess Willingham) to help tell the sasstastic story of Rad Maverix through encapsulating words. My original goal, was to be able to express the mission + story of Rad Maverix without the blink of an eye. However, I got a lot more than I bargained for. 

One of the initial steps to working with Jess included filling out a questionnaire, so she can further understand my vision as a business and lifestyle brand. One question stumped me. She wanted to know what I was best known for. Woah. Did I really want to know? I immediately felt overwhelmed thinking about what others thought about me. I couldn't help but start to worry! "Oh shit" were my exact words, if I remember correctly. 

I had no other option but to ask my friends and family. I sent out a lot of texts; sent some to people who were close to me and some who weren't. I wanted to capture all possible opinions and thoughts. Of course, I have always cared (to an extent) what others thought about my character but I've always kind of went with the philosophy that it’s none of my business what others think of me.

So I send the texts out asking what others thought of me and anxiety set in. I just opened the door to be completely roasted by my friends and family. (You know who you are!)

I expected responses like:

  • Valley Girl
  • Blonde / ditzy
  • Smartass (this was actually my dad’s first response. And I’ll own it, so what if I’m a little too sassy sometimes)

But the responses I got were seriously out of this world. I finally felt like I was winning at life. I quickly learned that I, in fact, am making a great impression. All of my hard work to become a kind human being has paid off…and I didn’t even know it.

A few replies I received:

  • Loyal
  • Kind
  • Respectful
  • Outgoing
  • Hard Worker
  • Considerate
  • Champagne
  • Selfless

I could go on; but what others think about me is not the point I’m trying to make. I want you to think about the legacy you are leaving.   If you passed tomorrow, how would you be remembered? For good? For bad?

Every interaction you make has the possibility of making a lasting impression. It's up to you to decide if that's a positive or negative impression. Be kind + work hard.

Revisiting 2016 Goals

  1. Continue the growth of Rad Maverix Brand // launched the Spring '16 Collection!
  2. Stay active + push goals at the gym // Nutrition has been up + down but starting the LG ConfidenceKini Challenge April 3rd! (I plan to vlog about this, so if you're not already, subscribe to my YouTube Channel!) Also, I have been actively logging my meals in MyFitnessPal! 
  3. Want less; give more // This is an ongoing process. However, I have reduced my (clothing) shopping tremendously. 
  4. Work harder on what matters // I have wanted to start a YouTube Channel for a long time---finally jumped in and did it.
  5. Be present (less electronics) // Cellphones are put away while eating dinner. JF has even taken part and has committed to being "more present" while at the dinner table.
  6. Figure out what I want to be when I grow up (just kidding, I’m never growing up, adulting is so overrated) // Still working on this! ;)
  7. Be bold, be fearless, be authentic // Fearless: putting myself out there and making a YouTube video. It takes guts, yall!
  8. Cultivate kindness + wellness // A project is in the works for this! Stay excited!
  9. Promote self-love // I am currently in a beginning stages of a Vlog/Blog series for promoting self-love!
  10. Stay consistent + be supportive // This is my hardest goal yet. I tend to take on way too many activities and let others fall to the side. I am working on "saying no" and staying consistent on what matters in the long haul.

3 Habits to Help You Conquer the Work Day - Pin for later!

I’ve mentioned before how I maintain a love / hate relationship with Mondays. I love them because it’s a brand new shiny week with fresh opportunities. But I hate them because of the obvious reasons: I don’t get to stay home with my dogs or drink mimosas for breakfast. For some Monday’s can be the best + productive days of the week but then Thursday and Friday roll around and motivation is nowhere to be found. Whether you love Monday’s or loathe them, here are some habits that help me stay motivated during the work week.


3 Quick Tips To Conquering the Work Day:

1. ditch the Distractions

How easy is it to pull out your phone and start scrolling through Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest when you’re feeling the least bit motivated at work? Someone tags you in a picture; of course you need to check to make sure its “Facebook-worthy”. Another friend commented on your recent Instagram post so now you feel the need to comment back! Prevent these distractions by turning off all social media notifications. This will be difficult for some but the amount of work you can get done in place of scrolling through Instagram will be magical.

2. Take Time for You

Take short 10 minute breaks throughout the day and do something that soothes the soul and improves your overall well-being. If you’re in an office, close the door and complete a short (non-strenuous) yoga routine. Perhaps you’re in a cubicle? Download the Headspace App and meditate for 10 minutes. Or take a brisk walk to get your blood + energy flowing. Not only will your body thank you but your mind will too.

3. Trump the To-Do List

There’s always that moment you see your to-do list and immediately want to crawl back into bed. However, making it a habit to write a practical to-do list every morning helps you maintain purpose and clarity throughout the day. Let your to-do list guide you but don’t let it become impossible. There are many different ways to write functional to-do lists but you have to figure out what works for you. Some like to write the biggest and hardest task first and others like to write down the quickest tasks to achieve so they can feel the satisfaction of crossing items off of their list.

Spring Cleaning Checklist + March Calendar Download

There is something refreshing and inspiring about crisp + cool mornings that make me want to spring clean and prepare for the upcoming season. And when I say, "spring clean" I mostly mean the act of ruthlessly throwing away any and all clutter that no longer serves me.

I have to be honest, I don't absolutely love cleaning, but I love a clean home. I'm not the only one, right? Every once in a while I'll get into these cleaning / decluttering moods and I promise you, nothing is safe if it's within arms-reach. I often come across an item and have to ask myself: "Why in the heck do I still have this?", "What purpose does this serve me?", or "How does this item improve my life?". If I can't provide a decent answer for any of those questions, then into the garbage or donation bag, the item goes. The older I get the more I'm learning to live more and more minimally but I'm still haunted by all of the product and items I thought I, once, could not live without. I've also learned that maintaining a tidy home is one that helps you feel relaxed and at ease.

Although daily and weekly upkeep is often needed I've compiled a list of tasks that can (sometimes) be put off until the beginning of a new season. As always, there is never one right way to do things and there is no plan that is perfect for every home or scenario! Feel free to use this guideline and tweak it to find a plan that works for you and makes your house a happy and relaxing home.

The Rad Warriors Support Mission is complete.

Words cannot express how rewarding it feels to make a positive impact on several people that cannot pay you back. In case you're new around here, the Rad Warriors Support Mission was started to raise funds and awareness for the need of basic day-to-day necessities that are essential for our soldiers fighting overseas. After a conversation with my brother, a 13-year Service Member, I learned that it’s not unusual for our military to go without basic necessities like deodorant and toothbrushes.

& that's how the Rad Warriors Support Mission was born.

Here’s what we got to send in our care packages:

500+ individually wrapped snacks, 360 Face wipes / cleansing cloths , 288 razors + shaving cream, 144 shirts, 50 toothbrushes, 30 sticks of deodorant, 16 tubes of toothpaste, several thousand q-tips and various magazines + puzzle books.

I have a confession to make. I’m addicted to making lists and feeling organized (read more on that, here). I’m the type of person that can walk by an aisle of perfectly aligned shampoo bottles and feel overwhelmingly satisfied.

A few weeks ago, while in KC, a friend of mine and I were feeling a little stressed because of a time crunch. We were trying to find a place to eat dinner (without reservations on a Saturday night…), beat the KC traffic and make it back to a rodeo in time for her boyfriend to rope. When all of a sudden we passed “Beauty Brands”—we were both taken aback by the cleanliness and organization of the store/products. I mentioned how satisfied I felt just seeing how organized the products were. She replies, “I feel like I need to go sit inside that store and destress”. At last, I have found someone who is logistically nerdy as me.

I've been working on making my resolutions happen and using my agenda (currently using the Get To Work Book) has been a huge help. Although, I love this agenda and it helps me tremendously keep on task; I still love my traditional one page to do list. I like keeping my lists on single sheets of paper so they're easy to throw in your purse to take to market or slide in and out of your agenda.

Making To Do List's Happen:

  1. Break it down. Turn big projects into smaller, actionable tasks; plan out which will be the next step toward completing the whole project.

  2. Give yourself a timeline. The more time you give yourself to finish something, the less likely it is that you will finish in that time-frame.

  3. Schedule your to-do list. Pick a time every day (or however often fits you) to sit down and determine what still needs to be accomplished.

  4. Keep it simple yet informative. If one of your tasks is to call the doctor's office, provide the telephone number on your to-do list so you're not scrambling to find it later.

  5. Start fresh. Begin each day with a new list so the old items don't clog up your agenda and you can see action items disappear.
