Sprucing Up Our Log Cabin Kitchen (+ Inspo Pics)

If you follow along on Instagram you might know that we finally ordered new kitchen counter tops. I've been (not so) patiently waiting for these since we moved in last summer! I'm so stoked and it has kind of sparked a new sense of motivation to get back to sprucing up our house and making it more of a home. Or maybe it's just the colder weather and I'm nesting?

So here's my issue: where do you start when you don't really align with any one specific style? I'm not country. I'm not boho. I'm not a minimalist.

I like minimal but cozy (hygge/Scandinavian style), I like industrial but I also love french farmhouse vibes. Trying to bring all of these flavors together into one cohesive soup has proved to be a bit troubling- especially since the canvas I'm working with is a bit, set in its ways. We live in a log cabin, not one of those homes that look like a log cabin, but a legitimate log cabin and most of our interior walls are timbers of wood. Yeesh, trying to transform a very country setting into a not-very-country-at-all vibe has been an undertaking.

A little backstory: When we were looking at our house last summer before buying it, I walked in and fell in love with the open concept and vaulted ceiling. But immediately wanted to paint every single log wall in the house. It's too dark and gloomy for my liking. Unfortunately, at the time I couldn't convince JF into agreeing that we should paint the logs. At the time, I was envisioning the walls looking like ship-lap after being painted a light light grey-almost-white color. It wasn't until a few weeks ago when JF was like, "we should paint these log walls to help brighten up the house." AS IF IT WAS SOME BRAND NEW AND NOVEL IDEA! I just looked at him like...

giphy.gif
giphy.gif

At this time, I've decided to leave painting the log walls as my very last option, mostly because I hate painting and what if we end up not liking the end result?! And also because this isn't our furrever home, so that leaves me with the question: does the value outweigh the effort? Sometimes I wish I could just turn off my business-geared mind.

So we've bought the granite, and the sink and faucet. After all of these are installed I plan to install a backsplash. Not anytime soon but eventually! Something light + airy to offset the moody walls and flooring.

Of course, I've done what any basic woman would do and resorted to good ole Pinterest. Below are a few kitchens + spaces I'm drawing inspiration from.

Quick Trip to Fort Worth

IMG_6922.JPG

Lord have mercy, you guys. It was quite the eventful weekend. We woke up so early on Saturday morning and headed down to Fort Worth, Texas with our friends/family (framily?) Drew and Savanna, to hang out with our other friends (who also happen to be family). We didn’t really have much lined out besides tickets to watch Easton Corbin at Billy Bob’s and to squeeze in a bit of shopping + eating down at the stockyards.

Depending on who’s driving, it’s only about a 5ish hour drive to Ft. Worth from our doorstep – depending on how many times we need to stop to use the restrooms. 🤷🏼‍♀️ It’s kind of funny, we had to stop 3x on the way down and didn’t stop one single time on the way home (I think we were all really ready to get into our own beds; we were up for almost 24 hours Saturday!).

Well, anyways, on the way down, we make it about 20 minutes out from Ft. Worth when BOOM – a hawk smashes into our windshield while driving 80mph down the interstate. I shit you not; I thought we were all going to die. At first, I thought some jackass had dropped a brick from an overpass because it was SO loud. I’m not sure how that hawk didn’t end up going all the way through the windshield but the glass ended up staying intact long enough for us to get off of the interstate.

We were in luck because we were just a short drive from Grapevine, TX and they just so happen to have a Ford dealership in town (we were in JF’s Ford F250) and we were hoping they might be able to replace it. While driving to the dealership, the windshield was literally flexing in and out from the wind/pressure—we were just sure the glass was going to come crashing down.

The Ford dealership tells us that their service department doesn’t replace windshields and gave us a couple numbers to call. Of course, we’re all like, ‘Well, shit. It'll probably be Monday before we can get it fixed.’ But you see, home girl does not play like that. I was determined to find an auto glass company to come to the scene, no matter the price (I was that desperate). Luckily, after a few closed shops and unanswered phone calls, the nicest guy at Quality Auto Glass offered to make the drive from North Dallas to come fix it for us that Saturday afternoon. AND even more so luckily, it didn’t cost us a fortune.

To make a long story short, JF’s sister, Jessie, came and picked Savanna and I up so we could go ahead and get to the hotel to get around and hang out with everyone while JF and Drew waited to get the windshield replaced. No worries though -- they were able to Uber to the local Golf Galaxy, so their afternoon wasn't totally wasted!

It was only a few hours later and JF and Drew were on their way to Ft. Worth – and they made it in one piece! Geeze that was a long few hours anticipating their arrival.

IMG_6854.JPG

The rest of the evening was a blast and stress-free compared to the events that had taken place prior. We got to shop a bit, watch the longhorn "cattle drive" and enjoy a glass of wine while listening to live music at the historic downtown Ft. Worth Stockyards. Next thing I know, it's a few lemon drop shots, vodka waters and $40 at the local Whata-Burger later and its 4a Sunday morning.

We woke up Sunday and decided to all go eat brunch at Flipz Patio Grill. This place was SO cool! If you come across one, you gotta go! Then everyone decides to stop at the Tanger Outlet Mall on the way home. I was equal parts "yes I want to go" and "no I just wanna be home" lol. Either way, it was time well spent.

What's In My Makeup Bag (Spring 2018)
IMG_6764.JPG

I’ve had a few requests on the ‘gram to share what beauty products I use + what my daily makeup routine looks like these days. Although my basic day-to-day routine RARELY changes (like, I’ve been using the same style of products for what feels like, furrever) I do love trying new products occasionally! With that being said, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but not much has changed since my last 'whats in my bag' post LOL I am a creature of habit and when I find products that work well with my (sometimes-finicky) skin, I like to stick with it.

The Base

I have been using and continue to use the IT Cosmetics line for my base coverage. I don’t like a lot of coverage, I prefer the ‘barely there’ look when it comes to the ‘foundation’ part of my routine. I have previously used the IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream but have found my skin feels healthier + freer when I only use powder for coverage.

Eyes

As far as the eyes go, I tend to use bronzey and neutral colors to help my eyes stand out. I always feel like it’s harder for those with blue eyes to get their eyes to “pop” and not blend in with their face because they are considerably lighter than other eye colors. (Flashback to high school when heavy black eyeliner was all the rage 😩🤦🏼‍♀️)

  • Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer - I have oily skin so this helps my eyeshadow stay in place — even after the gym! This is another tried + true go-to.
  • Tartelette "Flirt" Eyeshadow palette
  • Maybelline Lash Sensational Curvitude - This mascara (+ my lash serum) has changed the game for me. I accidentally found this mascara on an end cap at ULTA and didn't realize it was "waterproof" until after I had used it and couldn't figure out why I was having such a difficult time removing it LOL I have never bought a waterproof mascara on purpose in my entire life but I am actually LOVING this mascara! It lengthens + adds the perfect amount of curl to my lashes.
  • Nyx Eyeliner - I normally only wear eyeliner if I'm going out, but this brand is my go-to
  • Nyx Eyebrow Pencil - This has been a continuous beauty repurchase, I'd even say it is comparable to Anastasia Beverly Hills, but less expensive!

Lips

My go-to's lately have been my standard red lippy and new to the crew, a 'plumping' lip gloss. I love a bold red lip and I really like that it has become a part of my signature look (I actually feel naked without it!).

Style Obsession: The Camel Coat
Rad Maverix

I can't get over the sea of camel coats this season. So classy, so chic and such a breath of fresh air. The best part about the camel coat? They are effortlessly chic, versatile + oh so flattering. Most have buttons or wraps that tie right around the waist, accentuatingthe waist line. When it comes to versatility, you can use the camel coat to dress up a pair of boyfriend jeans or throw over a slip dress, the possibilities are endless. If you're in to curating a "capsule" wardrobe, this should definitely be on your list!

I bought this one few months ago and it has been my go-to all winter long, I see myself owning this for years to come.

OOTD - Finally Not Wearing All Black

While I was in Vegas last month I got to meet up with one of my good friends, Tyler Bicknell, owner over at Tyler Bicknell Photography. After a night of partying at the South Point, we hopped in an Uber and set up camp at the Springs Preserver for a (super) quick photo shoot!

I wore this outfit on our "chill" day where we chowed down on Mexican food and mimosas, meandered Cowboy Christmas and then later that evening watched the NFR at the Thomas & Mack. Although I don't typically wear a lot of contrasting colors at once, I am really loving the contrast of these unlikely pairs, camo, burnt orange + maroon. I really love how the maroon velvet heels added a splash of color I didn't know I needed. I got a lot of compliments on these heels! Really love how versatile they can be. I'm really envisioning wearing these with a black dress + black leather jacket. ;)

Also really loving the embroidered detail on the back of this slouchy burnt orange cardigan, adds a bit of flare without being "too much". (Okay, who am I kidding? I'm *always* too much.) You can kind of see by these photos that this is a super slouchy / over-sized sweater with a subtle bishop sleeve.

Can we talk about these jeans for a sec? I have been living in them lately. They are a true denim and a relaxed boyfriend style fit. I bought these at The Painted Buffalo Boutique in downtown Coffeyville, KS last month and they're either on my body or in the dirty clothes basket.

Let's Talk Tees - Girl Power
Rad Maverix

When I started playing around with designs for the summer ’17 collection I had a couple different themes in mind, southwest + powerful. I'm taking you behind the scenes of the Girl Power Tee.

I can’t lie – this is my 2nd comfiest & favorite tee in all of Rad Maverix tees. It’s flowy (like the Rise + Shine tank!) but slightly fitted and incredibly soft. I love the muscle tank style + GIRL POWER design; it’s edgy but soft, masculine but chic.

This design was inspired by my latest tattoo; GRL PWR.

I remember back in my college days, I took a women’s feminism class at KU. It really opened my eyes up about feminism and its true meaning.

Let’s rewind to the 90s shall we? I have always been a promoter of women and a ‘girls girl’ at heart. I will support + encourage women until the day I die (although, I’m hoping I leave a legacy of inspired + motivated women to do the same.)

Read more on leaving a legacy.

The truth is, I always thought that being a feminist meant:

  • You were a woman who couldn’t get a date
  • A man-hater
  • A woman who thought she was better than the man
…we were all feminists and we didn’t even know it.

Back to the feminism 101 lecture – on the first day of class, our male teacher (…the irony) asked us to raise our hands if we considered ourselves to be a feminist. We all looked around and kind of shrugged our shoulders when finally one woman out of 28 decided to raise her hand. He then asked, "Who in here believes that women deserve the same opportunities as men"? Everyone fiercely raised their hands in agreement, looking at each other with that “hell yea” look; shaking our heads up and down.

His next question, “Who in here thinks they should get paid the same wages as a man providing the same services with the same experience(s) and education?” Again, every single female student raised their hand with even more oomph and sassitude.

Lastly, he asked us, “Who in here believes they have the right to do what they please with their bodies?” You can probably guess what happens next. Yes, we all vivaciously raised our hands.

We quickly picked up what he was laying down…we were all feminists and we didn’t even know it.

Unfortunately, the word feminist has always had such a terrible connotation. I even remember after the Women's March in Washington, I saw a post on FB from a 'friend' saying she 'could never be a feminist'....major eye roll ensues. (That's kind of like saying, "I could never be a Christian because of the crazy Phelp's clan in Topeka, KS"...we can't let a few idiots ruin it for everyone.)

Still not sure if you're a feminist? take the short quiz below!

Anyways, that’s all I have today. I hope you’re enjoying the behind-the-scenes and inspiration on the latest collection of Rad Maverix tees.

I’m signing off with one of my favorite quotes.

We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, you can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful. Otherwise, you would threaten the man. Because I am female, I am expected to aspire to marriage. I am expected to make my life choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important. Now marriage can be a source of joy and love and mutual support but why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage and we don’t teach boys the same? We raise girls to see each other as competitors not for jobs or accomplishments, which I think can be a good thing, but for the attention of men. We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings in the way that boys are.
— Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

I hope you encourage someone today to do better + be better.

Let’s Talk Tees – (I always) Rise + Shine

Yesterday I launched my 5th collection of tees + tanks. This line of tees has been (by far) the best selling and I'm not going to lie - I'm pretty stoked about that.

I decided I wanted to share the details + inspiration behind the Summer '17 Collection with you. Let’s get started.

I always Rise + Shine

The inspiration behind this tee comes from the belief that we are not our circumstances. We are not defined by our hardships or shortcomings. We are ultimately the product of pushing through the most difficult and trying moments, hours, days and weeks of our lives. We are not only surviving but we are thriving. Kind of like that saying..."You have survived 100% of your worst days". Humans are incredibly resilient. Take a minute and think about it...to this date, there is nothing you have NOT survived.

I was then drawn to polish this tee off with a wolf howling to the moon. I find this to be very symbolic of strength, communication and determination. Wolves are dedicated survivors, quite like most of us.

This tee was also inspired by my mom. Growing up she would always wake me by singing ‘risssse and shinnnnnnne”.  I can still hear her bubbly voice happily chirping away and the smell of her French vanilla coffee like it was yesterday.

I really can’t express to you how thankful and gracious I am to hear all of your kind + generous words. Your enthusiasm and kindness does not go unrecognized or unappreciated. Be sure to check back to get the scoop on the other Summer 2017 tees!

xx

Black With A Touch Of Black
Rad Maverix

On Saturday we (Momma J and I) got up early and went to a few estate sales. An activity we enjoy probably too much but we all have our own vices, right?

Attending estate sales has felt a bit different this year. Maybe it's just me and my renewed outlook on life and it's even kind of hard to explain...but these estate sales have felt VERY odd + kind of delicate. I can't quite put my finger on the types of emotions these homes were holding but there was something different in the air as we rummaged through someone's entire life.

Literally.

This one house we stopped at, appeared to have been abandoned by its once long-time tenants. The beds still had sheets on them, towels still in the bathrooms, tools + paint still on the workbenches. Reading glasses still laying atop a pile of books.

It was like this elderly couple simply walked away from their lives and never looked back. Leaving clothes, books + magazines, comforters / blankets / sheets, wash cloths, photos and other personal items untouched. It makes you stop and think about the kind of legacy you're leaving for your family...children + grandchildren. If I ever have kids, they're going to think I'm colorblind because most of my closet lacks color.

Anyways, I really love how this look turned out. A little black with a touch of black and a dab of nude. AND I told you, you'd be seeing these booties ALL SUMMER LONG!

Cardigans + Shorts Give Me The Feels
Rad Maverix

If I had a uniform it would most definitely include graphic tees + cardigans. I love how they both can be transitioned from a day to night look and also help you transition your wardrobe from spring to summer and summer to fall.

I wore this look to a Ranch Rodeo in Pawhuska, Okla. I was aiming for cute but still functional + comfy. Because comfort is a major requirement when you're sitting in the stands of a rodeo arena for hours on end. You will probably be seeing these booties all summer long, they are SO comfortable and literally can match any outfit. Not to mention they make me look taller than I am (win/win!).

Can we talk about these shorts for a sec? If I'm being honest...these are totally out of my comfort zone. These are shorter than any shorts I've warn in my old age and I definitely used this cardigan to ease my way out of the comfort zone.

Florals + Bells
Rad Maverix

A few weeks ago I heard skinny jeans were ‘on the way out’.

This is a catastrophe.

Panic ensues.

Skinny jeans…out of style? GET OUT OF HERE.

I die for a good pair of skinnies (see my favorite + affordable shredded denim here). Maybe it’s because of my height + figure – I just really love the way they make me feel taller + leaner? Not to mention, skinnies can literally go with anything and can be suited for any occasion.

But as with everything else history always repeats itself and the fashion industry has welcomed, with wide-open arms, the return of the bell bottom jeans.

Well, HELLO, longer + leaner legs! I am living for these bells from Vestique and this Giani Bini Floral Bell-Sleeved blouse for the perfect Saturday morning brunch.

Lusting Lately: The Inverness Bathhouse
Inverness Bathhouse

Isn’t it true, you always want what you don’t have? Let me rewind. I’ve been obsessing lately over the tiny home movement + very minimal décor. And I think it has a lot to do with the size of house we’re currently living in. 3,300+ square feet; that’s way too much space for 2 humans + 3 dogs. I always thought I wanted a big home but now that we have it, I kind of want something different. I’m dreaming of a home that requires less maintenance, and if we’re being completely honest here, a lot less housework. Less square feet means less space for dog hair to roam.

But I’ve always had a weird obsession with minimal design with a splash of farmhouse style for good measure. Lately, I've been obsessed with the Inverness Bathhouse; like I can't stop thinking and dreaming about it (I'm being serious here). I reached out to the Architects for a bit of backstory on this perfect getaway home.

the inverness bathhouse

This quaint tiny home is located on the Point Reyes peninsula (located near Santa Rosa) along the rustic Northern California coast. Measuring in at 260 square feet, this 'bathhouse' is designed to support a large group of kids for a yearly family summer camp. This building is located in the midst of several farm buildings and is designed to blend in with its environment of the pastoral dairy farm.

During the summer family camp, the kids will pitch tents nearby while the Inverness Bathhouse provides welcoming + relaxing amenities for the nearby sleeping quarters.

The design concept is fun + whimsical and takes you back to the simple + care-free days with its practical character that reveals the rural quality of the property. Richardson Architects built this tiny home for the long-haul using wear-resistant and non-corrosive materials; including galvanized sheet metal, sealed board & batt siding and painted plywood and MDO board (MDO: paintable surface made of plywood with a weather-resistant resin overlay bonded to the wood by heat and pressure).

The bright white interior, gabled roof and wraparound porch gives you all the farmhouse feels and helps the small space fit in as a scaled-down version of the classic farmhouse and surrounding buildings. This property would be perfect for a weekend getaway at the lake or a quaint mother-in-law home perched up next to a weeping willow.

See the stunning structure below.

My Favorite (Affordable) Shredded Denim Spring '17
Rad Maverix Shredded Denim

"I hope you didn't pay full price for those jeans, they're barely there."

"Poor girl, can't even afford clothes without holes in them."

"Man this cattle market must really suck, you don't own a decent pair of jeans."

I've literally heard it ALL! It's no news that I am a sucker for a good pair of shredded jeans even if it comes with a bit of pity / sarcasm from others.

My absolute favorite pair of jeans are a pair of SUPER OLD American Eagle jeans that were too big. I knew I couldn't wear them anymore so my next options were to either donate / trash them or try to turn them into a pair of boyfriend jeans. Now, they are the perfectly imperfect pair of boyfriend jeans (first photo) and I could LIVE in them. My other favorite pair are also AEO jeans that were actually tore up when I purchased them but I had to work a little bit of magic to personalize them; JF said they were "too shredded" when I bought them, so of course, I had to tear them up even more (second photo). :)

Check out my absolute favorite pair of already-shredded-to-perfection jeans below!
